About MiBCIIn 1998, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, working with non-governmental organizations and federal, state, and provincial agencies, began to develop the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI). The vision was that populations and habitats of North America’s birds be protected, restored, and enhanced through coordinated efforts at international, national, regional, state, and local levels, guided by sound science and effective management. The Michigan Bird Conservation Initiative (MiBCI) is a state partnership of organizations, agencies, and individuals who care about bird conservation and want to work to make real the vision put forth by NABCI. An Ad Hoc Committee developed following an October 2003 meeting of interested partners. This committee developed a partnership structure and identified a number of projects vital to bird conservation. On March 2, 2006, a draft Vision and Rules of Engagement were promulgated for the formal inception of MiBCI and the initial members of the Coordinating Council formally committed to the partnership at a signing ceremony on May 10, 2006 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. More details on MiBCI's history can be found here. The current version of the Vision and Rules of Engagement can be found here. MiBCI's StructureMiBCI consists of a Coordinating Council, General Assembly, Local Chapters, and Subcommittees. The Coordinating Council consists of organizations which have a statewide role in conservation. The General Assembly consists of all organizations and individuals who have signed the MiBCI MOA. Local chapters consist of individuals and organizations working toward bird conservation at a local or regional level. MiBCI's subcommittees consist of General Assembly members working together to meet common goals on specific, targeted projects. The General Assembly meets annually at the MiBCI Ornithological Congress to share updates on research and conservation projects. While everyone is welcome to assist on project initiated by MiBCI, becoming a member by signing the MiBCI MOA publicly demonstrates your commitment to partnering to better conserve our avian resources. |
